How LagScope compares to every other connection tool
Every tool below is good at something — and we’ll say what. The confusion happens because they answer different questions while wearing the same “test your internet” costume. Capacity tests answer “how much can this pipe move?” Path tools answer “where on the route does it break?” VPNs answer “can a different route help?” LagScope answers the one gamers actually ask: “what does my game feel, second by second, and can I prove it?”

Speedtest by Ookla
Right tool for: verifying your ISP delivers the bandwidth you pay for; checking a new plan; raw download/upload numbers.
The industry standard for capacity, and genuinely good at it: multiple TCP streams to a nearby, capacity-optimized server, peak Mbps in seconds. Its business is measurement data — which is fine, but know the shape of what you get. For gaming it answers the wrong question: it averages a handful of ping samples to a server chosen for throughput, runs over TCP (which silently retransmits, erasing packet loss), and finishes before an intermittent problem can show up. Right tool for: “can my line stream Netflix in 4K?” — the fastest possible answer to one question.
Netflix’s own test, measuring throughput to the same servers that deliver your shows. That focus is its honesty: it doesn’t pretend to measure anything else. It reports a latency figure too (including loaded latency if you dig in), but the target is a video CDN, the protocol is TCP, and the session is seconds long. For streaming questions, it’s the correct tool. For “why did I die behind cover,” it was never in the running.
Cloudflare speed test
Right tool for: a quick, honest snapshot of line quality — speed, latency, jitter and loaded latency in one clean page.
The closest in spirit to what we do, and the only mainstream speed test that reports loaded latency (your ping while the line is busy — the bufferbloat signal). Credit where due: if you want a 30-second read on whether your line is healthy, it’s a good instrument. Where it stops: it’s a one-shot snapshot with no continuous monitoring, no event log, no true UDP game-traffic loss, no per-game verdicts, and no exportable evidence. It tells you how the line was for thirty seconds; LagScope tells you what it did during your whole ranked session — and writes the receipt.
PingPlotter
Right tool for: network troubleshooting when you need to know which hop is failing — the per-hop timeline is excellent.
A serious, installable desktop diagnostic that traceroutes continuously and graphs latency and loss per hop over time. If your question is “is the problem my router, my ISP’s edge, or the backbone?”, PingPlotter is built for exactly that, and it’s good at it. The trade-offs: it’s an install with an IT-grade interface (and a paid tier for the useful history), it speaks ICMP rather than game-like UDP — some routers answer ICMP lazily, which can look like problems your game never feels — and nothing in it speaks gamer: no verdicts, no per-game readiness, no shareable proof.
WinMTR
Right tool for: a free, two-minute per-hop loss table to attach to an ISP or game-support ticket.
The old reliable: ping + traceroute combined into a live table of loss and latency per hop. ISPs’ second-line support know it, and game studios’ support pages have asked for MTR output for years. Its limits are the same family as PingPlotter’s, plus age: Windows-only, unmaintained UI, ICMP-based. Use it alongside LagScope, not instead of it — MTR shows where the path hurts, LagScope shows what your game felt. The evidence guide combines both into one ISP-proof package.
ExitLag-style gaming VPNs
Right tool for: the minority case where your ISP’s route to the game server is genuinely bad and a paid detour is measurably shorter.
These aren’t diagnostics at all — they’re a treatment sold before the diagnosis. Rerouting helps when your ISP hands your traffic a bad path (it happens: cheap peering, wrong-direction routes), and in that case a gaming VPN can legitimately shave ping. But most connections aren’t mis-routed, and for them a VPN just adds hops, encryption overhead and a shared, congested endpoint — plus $5–10 a month. The company selling the rerouting will never tell you you don’t need it. We don’t sell anything, so we can: run the 10-minute A/B test with LagScope and let your own numbers decide.
