What your numbers mean for Valorant
Ping in Valorant decides who wins a swing when both players react at the same time — the server sees the lower-ping player’s shot first. The 40 ms line is where that stops mattering for most ranks; past it you start losing fights you should win, and past 60 ms it’s every duel.

One more thing averages hide: a single spike over 300 ms or 1% packet loss will cost you rounds no matter how low the average sits. That’s why the test above counts spikes and loss separately — a connection can be “fine on average” and still throw the fight.
Fixes that actually work for Valorant
- Play on your nearest Riot server. Valorant assigns a data center automatically by region, and parties get placed by the party’s mix — queueing with a friend two coasts away can drag everyone onto a far server. In a custom game lobby you can pick the data center yourself and see live ping per server; learn which one is genuinely closest for you.
- Check your ISP’s route to Riot Direct. Riot runs its own backbone (Riot Direct) to cut hops between you and the server — but your ISP decides how your traffic reaches it, and the cheapest route isn’t the shortest. If your ping is far above what your city should get, run the 10-minute VPN A/B test: if a gaming VPN endpoint near the server beats your raw ping, your ISP’s routing is the problem, and that’s evidence for a support ticket.
- Kill Wi-Fi spikes. Full signal means nothing — Wi-Fi spikes from interference your speed test never sees. If you’re on Wi-Fi, test your own link; one Ethernet cable fixes the most common Valorant lag complaint on the internet.
- Stop the background downloads. If your ping only explodes when someone streams or Windows decides to update, that’s bufferbloat — your router queuing game packets behind bulk traffic. Run the full monitor’s 8-second stress test to confirm.
